We are indebted to Tristan Tzara and his followers for the newest
and perhaps the most important doctrinary insistence as applied to art
which has appeared in a long time. Dada-ism is the latest phase of
modernism in painting as well as in literature, and carries with it all
the passion for freedom of expression which Marinetti sponsored so
loudly in his futuristic manifestos. It adds likewise an exhilarating
quality of nihilism, imbibed, as it is said, directly from the author
of Zarathustra. Reading a fragment of the documentary statement of
Dada-ism, we find that the charm of the idea exists mainly in the fact
that they wish all things levelled in the mind of man to the degree of
commonplaceness which is typical and peculiar to it.

I have decidedly mixed feelings about this essay. It took until about halfway through it before I realized that he was actually being sincere and not satirical. While I can admit that the world of art often becomes burdensomely pretentious, I don\'t buy into the Dadaist view that nothing is better or worse than anything else. I do think that art has the power to express emotional truths; I would even go so far as to say that this is its essential purpose. To claim that Truth and Meaning are not key elements of art is almost tantamount to denying the existence of Truth and Meaning entirely -- at which point we enter into the very muddy waters of existentialism and/or nihilism. My view of art is much like your view of fashion, Jared: the artist IS making a statement, whether he is cognizant of it or not. Even the Dadaist who wholeheartedly goes for the absurd and the nonsensical is expressing his view of the absurdity of existence -- his \"truth\", as it were. Yes, sometimes art can become so weighed down with Meaning and Significance that we lose the simple joy of the work, but I think it\'s possible to appreciate art on both levels if we keep a balanced view of things. The Dadaists, I fear, reacted so strongly against one extreme that they slipped off the opposite cliff. :) Still, interesting food for thought, as always.
